Netflix has tons of movies to choose from. Actually, too many. Picking the perfect movie to watch can sometimes feel overwhelming. But don’t worry, I’ve you covered. Here’s a list of some movies I’ve watched that are hundred percent worth your time this weekend. From rom-coms to animations to thrillers, I’m promising you lots of interesting screen time on the streaming service. I also included something for the finance geeks (two movies)!
What to Watch on Netflix this Weekend
1. Hit Man
Genre: Action-Comedy
Favour’s Rating: 8/10
Gary Johnson (Glen Powell) is a quiet philosophy professor who also happens to be… a hitman? Not exactly. He only pretends to be one, working with the police to catch people trying to hire a contract killer. He’s great at his job, but things get tricky when he starts falling for Madison (Adria Arjona), a woman looking to escape her abusive husband. Directed by Richard Linklater, Hit Man is a sharp, funny action-comedy that plays with themes of identity and deception. A great choice if you’re in the mood for a mix of action, humor, and romance.
2. Woman of the Hour
Genre: Thriller
Favour’s Rating: 8/10
A serial killer joins a dating game show and picks his next victim right in front of a live audience. Woman of the Hour is based on the real-life case of Rodney Alcala, who actually did this in 1978. But this film isn’t just about the killer. Anna Kendrick, making her directorial debut, focuses on Sheryl (played by Kendrick and based on Cheryl Bradshaw), the woman matched with Alcala, as well as the many women who suspected and reported him — only to be ignored. Perfect if you love true crime stories and psychological thrillers.
3. Billions
Genre: Finance, Business Drama
Favour’s Rating: 8.5/10
If you love finance, power struggles, and high-stakes drama, Billions is for you. This TV series (which ran from 2016 to 2023) follows the intense rivalry between hedge fund manager Bobby Axelrod (Damian Lewis) and U.S. attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti). With sharp dialogue, complex characters, and plenty of twists, Billions is a binge-worthy show about wealth, influence, and ambition.
4. Always Be My Maybe
Genre: Romantic-Comedy
Favour’s Rating: 7.5/10
This rom-com, written by and starring Ali Wong and Randall Park, follows childhood friends Sasha and Marcus, who lose touch after a teenage romance gone wrong. Years later, Sasha is a celebrity chef, while Marcus is still living a laid-back life at home. When fate reunites them, sparks fly in unexpected ways. Oh, and there’s a hilarious cameo from Keanu Reeves! Always Be My Maybe is both heartwarming and laugh-out-loud funny. If you’re in for feel-good entertainment this weekend, this movie’s calling your name.
5. BlackBerry
Genre: Biopic
Favour’s Rating: 7.5/10
The rise and fall of the world’s first smartphone get the Hollywood treatment in BlackBerry. This fast-paced drama tells the true story of how a small Canadian company revolutionized mobile technology—only to crash under Silicon Valley’s pressure. Instead of focusing on greed and fraud like other corporate downfall movies, BlackBerry highlights the rapid, cutthroat nature of the tech world. I agree with the Critics who called it “wildly entertaining and “ferocious”. Great pick for anyone interested in finance and business drama.
6. The Black Book
Genre: Thriller
Favour’s Rating: 8/10
Paul Edima (Richard Mofe-Damijo) has left his past behind and now serves as a church deacon. But when corrupt cops frame and kill his son, he’s forced to use his old skills to seek justice. With high-stakes action and emotional depth, The Black Book is one of Nollywood’s biggest productions, and has drawn international attention. Think Taken, but with a fresh Nigerian twist.
7. Nimona
Genre: Animation
Favour’s Rating: 7/10
In a world where people fear her shapeshifting powers, Nimona decides to embrace being a villain. She teams up with the so-called bad guy, Blackheart, who is actually trying to prove his innocence. Based on N.D. Stevenson’s beloved graphic novel, Nimona is a visually stunning and deeply touching animated film about outsiders finding their place in the world. A great pick for fans of fantasy, adventure, and stories about misfits.
8. The Sea Beast
Genre: Animation
Favour’s Rating: 7.5/10
Think Moby Dick meets How to Train Your Dragon. In a world where sea monsters terrorize ships, hunters are seen as heroes. Jacob Holland, a top monster hunter, finds his journey disrupted when a young girl, Maisie, sneaks aboard his ship. Together, they discover that maybe these creatures aren’t the real villains. The Sea Beast, directed by Chris Williams (Moana, Big Hero 6), is a thrilling animated adventure that even got an Oscar nomination!
9. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
Genre: Thriller
Favour’s Rating: 8/10
Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is back in this follow-up to Knives Out. This time, he’s solving a case on a private Greek island owned by a tech billionaire. A weekend of fun turns deadly, and Blanc must untangle the lies and secrets of an all-star cast, including Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, and Kate Hudson. Clever, entertaining, and full of surprises, Glass Onion is a mystery movie you don’t want to miss.
