What Sage the Battle God is Wearing

Sagethebattlegod is a Nigerian rapper, singer, and songwriter who gained recognition with his debut album, “New School Testament,” which garnered over 800,000 digital engagements. His music blends classic and contemporary styles, and he’s performed at events like the Bole Festival and Felabration. Sage has received several nominations, most notably the All Varieties Awards 2024 Artist of the Year.

Sagethebattlegod isn’t just making waves in music, he’s turning heads in fashion too. As a style icon, Sage was featured on the cover of Untold Magazine’s April 2024 issue and as the star model in Estimag’s 2023 Holiday Issue. He has also appeared in Gmaro, IssueTaji, Selin, Marika, Quadro and Rebel Magazines.

From the streetwear-inspired flair of Fused Street’s 2022 collection to the refined edge of Oshobor’s 2024 Motunrayo Collection, Sage’s fashion choices strike a balance between street-smart and statement-making. His collaborations with brands like Mysogi Ads and Carabao Energy Drink (Nigeria’s first campaign) only affirm his growing influence as both a cultural and style icon. Whether it’s sharp tailoring or bold streetwear, Sage doesn’t just follow trends, he sets them. This is more than style. It’s self-expression. It’s Sage.

If you could raid any celebrity’s wardrobe for a red carpet event, whose would it be and why?

If I could raid any celebrity’s wardrobe, I’d choose Marvin Appiah Korang, known as the futurist. His style is so bold and innovative; it perfectly captures that futuristic, retro and high fashion statement I love. It would be amazing to incorporate some of his unique fits into a red-carpet look.

What’s your dream vacation destination and what would be the first thing you’d pack for it?

Paris! It’s always been my dream destination. The City of Lights and Love… I’d pack my favorite outfits first, and then a camera. I’ll be filming more cinematic contents.

You’re running late for a high-stakes meeting. What’s your go-to “I have my life together” outfit?

That would always be a double-breasted black oversized suit. I love making a bold statement, especially when I need to project confidence. It’s sharp, it’s powerful, and it says “I’m here to handle business”.

What’s the most unforgettable outfit you’ve ever worn and what made it so special?

Definitely the 92-pocket patched king outfit, custom-made by Eldreth Daniel, known as Eledin. I found his page through a friend and instantly loved his style. I needed something special for my performance at Bole Festival 2024. It was a one-of-a-kind piece, already sold out, but he agreed to make another just for me. The deadline was tight, but he pulled it off. My brother was skeptical – he often is with some of my choices – but I knew this outfit was meant to be. I told him, “This has to be what I wear.” Everyone absolutely loved it; it was unlike anything they’d ever seen before. It truly made the performance unforgettable! Much later, I contacted Eledin again – this time for a jacket to complement the outfit for Day 2 of Lagos Fashion Week 2024.

We spent time discussing the design, which was my favorite part. I absolutely love the creative process; once the work’s done, I’m already thinking, ‘What next?.’ Even with another incredibly tight deadline – I actually received the jacket the day of the event – it was perfect. Everyone loved the complete look. I even had the chance to meet some executives and designers, including Oshobor, who kindly made a VIP reservation for me. Ugo Monye and Eniafe Momodu alongside others also admired the outfit. It was truly a special experience.

What’s your fashion philosophy in one sentence?

I agree with Pharrell Williams – clothes shouldn’t hide us, they should showcase who we are. It’s about expressing your personality, not conforming to trends. Ultimately, feeling confident is key, but for me, that always starts with being clean, regardless of whether the outfit is trendy or not.
