What Adeleke Uzmat is Wearing

Hi, I’m Adeleke Uzmat Iyunade. I’m a 23-year-old multidisciplinary artist who moved to Lagos seven months ago to chase her passions—that’s probably the simplest way to describe me.

I’m a wardrobe stylist, a fashion designer (though I tend to hoard my sketches), a model, a highly skilled makeup artist, and an inventive creative director. Like I said: multidisciplinary.

Academically, I hold a degree in Special Education (Gifted & Talented Education) and Communication and Language Arts from the University of Ibadan. I graduated in 2023. Since then, I’ve worked as an assistant to an accountant at a government establishment (an experience, to say the least), a business developer for a small brand, and currently, I freelance in digital marketing—mostly consulting—while working on a few personal projects.

One of those projects is a sustainable fashion brand I’m building with some of my friends. I’m also the co-founder of Siren.Co, a community and organization dedicated to supporting women and girls. Alongside my amazing co-founder and a team of passionate volunteers, we offer educational resources, entertainment, and direct support—both online and offline—for women in unsafe conditions. Our goal is simple: to ensure that women always have a safe space.

If you could raid any celebrity’s wardrobe for a red carpet event, whose would it be and why?

I don’t know if this counts, but she’s definitely a celebrity in the fashion world; Fisayo Longe of Kai Collective. As a fellow maximalist who appreciates bold colors and personal expression, I know picking out a red carpet outfit from her closet would be a breeze. Her taste is impeccable.

What’s your dream vacation destination, and what’s the first thing you’d pack?

Ooh, great question. My dream destination is Italy, and the first thing I’d pack is pepper sauce, that’s the Yoruba woman in me! But seriously, I’d also pack my lightest, flimsiest dresses. I want to feel the sun and breeze on my skin while exploring the city.

You’re running late for a high-stakes meeting—what’s your go-to “I have my life together” outfit?

Honestly, I tend to always look like I’ve got it together. But if I had to choose: crease-free tailored pants, a blouse with a sash I can tie into a bow, polished ballet flats with sheer socks, and skinny sunglasses. Hair in a bun, gold accessories; earrings, rings, bracelet, necklace and a bag that matches either my shoes or pants. Simple, sharp, and put-together.

What’s the most unforgettable outfit you’ve ever worn, and why was it so special?

I’ve had many, but the standout is my red outfit for GTCO Fashion Weekend 2024. It was my first time attending, so I wanted to look grand but feel comfortable. I wore a red dress I’d owned for 6–7 years that I’d never worn. I converted it into a skirt to beat the heat, the neckline was high, and the Lagos sun was not playing! It also had iron burns at the hem, so I laced them up as a last-minute fix. The entire look came together beautifully and felt like me. Red is my favorite color, and my hair that day? Perfect.

What’s your fashion philosophy in one sentence?

Find your personal essence, you always look your best when you feel like yourself.

How much do you budget for fashion (monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly)?

A budget? That’s funny. I don’t have one. When I see something I love, I make space for it in my finances. Spending on looking good is self-care, and self-care shouldn’t be boxed into a budget. That said, I do estimate costs for occasional wants—like a pair of shoes, a mini skirt, or a bag—and try to have that amount accessible. I shop on the go—markets, random spots—so I stay prepared. No fixed amount, just a flexible monthly system.
